In 2014 Ted read an article titled, "Music, Money, and Hate," written by Keegan Hankes and published in The Intelligence Report of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The article started Ted on a journey investigating how music was being used to spread hate in the world. Research included a review of widespread media articles, interviews, youtube videos, CD's, and reading numerous books (see the suggested reading page for some recommendations). As a trained music therapist, Ted decided to match stories about music therapists with stories from the hate music industry. The idea was to share basic information about both fields - illustrating contrasts, juxtapositions, intersections, and interactions. After over four years of research, writing, and editing, the book is finally available. Readers will learn new things about both hate music and music therapy, and will hear suggestions for action. The book includes an historical perspective, as well as stories from current events. By focusing on information about the two contrasting fields Ted presents a unique way to use music as a medium to discuss systemic racism and discrimination as public health issues in need of compassionate attention.
